How to find out the frequency of RAM on a laptop

What does "current frequency" mean? To find out the maximum frequency supported by the memory modules installed in the laptop, you can use the CPU-Z program. It is worth clarifying that CPU-Z shows us Real Frequency, and manufacturers on their memory modules indicate Effective Frequency. The current efficient frequency shows us the task manager in Windows. And in general, when it comes to the memory frequency - it is almost always an effective frequency (real * 2). Such a confusion occurs because the clock impulses go with a frequency of 800 MHz, but the data is transmitted 2 times for each pulse. Marketers could not use it and in pursuit of large numbers began to specify not real, but an effective frequency.
Let's wonder on our example. To transfer the real frequency to efficiently, you need to multiply it by 2, that is, in this particular case, seen in CPU-Z. In the Count "Max Bandwidth" 800 MHz multiply on 2 and we get 1600 MHz (the effective frequency we saw in the task manager). It is with such a frequency (1600) and we buy an additional memory bar.
If we saw a lower frequency in the task manager than the modules support, it means that something prevents our modules to work at the maximum possible frequency.
In order to make sure that RAM really works on a reduced frequency, go to the MEMORY tab and look at the "DRAM FREQUENCY" parameter.
If everything works fine and there are no restrictions, then the "DRAM FREQUENCY" parameter (current frequency of RAM) must roughly coincide with the Max Bandwidth parameter on the SPD tab. Current frequency slightly floats (varied dynamically), therefore such errors (798.1 MHz instead of 800 MHz) are quite acceptable. But if you have, for example, instead of the 800 MHz, supported by the module (specified in Max Bandwidth), RAM operates at a frequency noticeable below (if the "DRAM FREQUENCY" parameter is noticeably lower), say, 533 MHz, then this is not there Well, you need to look for the cause and understand why RAM works at a slower frequency than the module (s) is supported. And the reasons usually may be three:
- The BIOS simply does not configure the memory frequency. It often happens that by default BIOS does not set the maximum frequency that modules support, and sets the frequency to minimal and you just need to go to the BIOS and adjust the frequency correctly (it is rather relevant for the PC than for modern budget laptops, not at all budget Laptops can be set up the frequency of RAM).
- Perhaps some of the other modules in your PC / laptop has a lower frequency - 533 MHz (efficient 1066 MHz), it means that this module will automatically cut to the frequency of 533 MHz (effective 1066 MHz). The frequency is always automatically set to the same on all modules by the smallest (by the slower module itself, because at a higher frequency it cannot work, and they all have to work synchronously at one frequency).

It should be remembered that the memory frequency is not the only indicator of its speed. There is such a parameter as timing (delays), and what they are less - the better.
For example, one module has timings 11-11-11-28 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS), and the other 13-12-12-32, and the frequency, and the volume of modules - the same, in which case the first module ( 11-11-11-28) will work a little faster. You should also know that the rates of timings increase with increasing frequency. For example, DDR3 memory, in general, has frequencies lower than DDR4, but also timings in DDR3 below. But all the same higher frequency is more important than lower timings, therefore DDR4 is faster than DDR3.
RAM for laptop different frequency
Acquire the memory of preferably the frequency on which the laptop already installed in the laptop is running (if you are going to leave the old memory bar and buy a new one to it).
